Panic Attacks Help

People who suffer panic attacks are very much aware of the things that are associated with it: having no breath, having a heart that pounds to much, being dizzy and having stomach problems. Outsiders might not understand. The sufferer has a fear that is not rational, and they might know that, but it doesn’t stop it. They are very shameful about it, and they don’t seek help, despite the fact that it exists.

If someone suffers from panic disorders, a combination of cognitive and behavioural therapies is the most effective.  Often just by understanding what a panic disorder is will help alleviate problems that are caused by the disorder.  By changing the way a person thinks he or she learns that having a panic attack does not mean he/she is going crazy, having a heart attack or going to die from it.  Using cognitive therapy allows a person to replace his/her way of thinking with positive and realistic perception of things.

When a person is on the verge of a panic attack, it’s not the fear of something (i.e. a car, animal, heights) it’s the actual fear of the attack. During a panic attack there are several changes that occur in the body to start the attack. When a panic attack occurs there is an overwhelming fear which some refer to as fight or flight.

There are several ways to help a person deal with a panic attack. One way is behavioural modification. Sometimes it might take a person several times to go back to the situation in which you experienced a panic attack to get relief from it. Others may never be able to cope again with the situation in which the panic attack occurred.

Again, using social settings as an example, these practices entail maybe just getting in the car to go to a party.  This allows the person to just deal with the feelings and emotions of just being in the car.  They soon learn to not focus on the situation that lies ahead or the consequences of their fear.  They soon learn that sitting in the car will not produce a panic attack.

People experience different physical symptoms then others. If you have a fear of driving down the freeway because one time you were driving and you suddenly had an attack come on, you might never want to drive on a freeway again. It might take one person a few times before trying to get back on the freeway and with someone else they might never get over that fear because they are afraid of having another attack.

Panic attack sufferers can also be helped with medication. As a rule, medication can control the symptoms people suffer with during panic attacks. Medication can also lessen the number of panic attacks and their severity. They can also reduce the fear and anxiety concerning a future attack.

A person can use relaxation techniques to deal with panic attacks. Some techniques consist of breathing exercises; positive visualization can be used as well. Also, a support group of other people suffering from panic attacks can be useful.

Although suffering from panic attacks can be a personal matter, they do affect many people. With so many people suffering from them, a person afflicted with them can easily find the help needed.
